Work will begin on $1B Port of Miami tunnel project

The planned $1 billion Miami tunnel project could begin work next month now that it has been approved by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Excavated dirt, once certified as clean fill, will be stored on Virginia Key and then used for environmental restoration there. Water produced by the drilling will also be stored and then recycled for use on the job. The project includes building two separate tunnels, which are expected to open in 2014.
