5 measurements may improve facial transplantation outcomes

Plastic surgeons can maximize outcomes of facial transplantation by ensuring that five soft-tissue measurements in the donor's face match the recipient's face, according to a study that will be presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons' annual meeting. Measurements that were off by as little as 1 millimeter resulted in disfigurement, researchers found. Measurements should match down the middle of the forehead, at the inner and outer corners of the eyes where the upper and lower eyelids meet, in the nose-to-chin distance or area and for the width of the mouth.
