Debt-limit proposal raises hope of averting default

President Barack Obama and Republican leaders began serious discussions of how to prevent the government from defaulting on debt after House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, proposed a temporary increase in the debt limit. The extension would expire after six weeks. The first meeting at the White House between Obama and GOP leaders failed to produce a breakthrough, but people who were present said progress was being made toward ending the standoff.
