Jobless claims in U.S. hit a 6-month high

Initial unemployment claims rose by 66,000 last week, to 374,000, the most in six months. The Labor Department said the U.S. government shutdown was only partly to blame for the surprise increase. About half of the claims reported were due to delays because of a switch in computer systems in California, the agency said.
