Mont. elementary students learn math designing a golf course

Fifth-graders from a Montana elementary school learned math concepts by designing catapults and mini-golf courses as part of an annual overnight field trip to the Montana Learning Center. The students learned about catapults before designing their own and figured out the area in three dimensions to design a golf-course hole. "We just let them loose, and they had to build with teamwork and the materials they had," teacher Kim Gilligan said.
