EU members block fast-track approval of biotech corn, potato

Some European Union member countries blocked fast-track approval of BASF AG's biotech potato and three biotech corn varieties from Monsanto Co., requiring government ministers to vote in a process that could take several months. A split among the ministers would leave the decision to the European Commission, which stated that the products pose "no risk to human or animal health or to the environment."
