Denver Zoo bids farewell to beloved elephant

Workers at the Denver Zoo euthanized Mimi, an elephant in residence there since 1961 who was believed to be the seventh-oldest elephant at a North American zoo. The animal suffered from arthritis and the effects of old age, caretakers said, and had been under hospice care since August. "This is never an easy decision, but it was the right one," said Brian Aucone, vice president for animal collections.
