J.C. Penney's offers "gift" to help get shoppers in stores

J.C. Penney CEO Ron Johnson's third e-mail to customers included a "gift" of $10 off their next purchase, an offer that looks very much like the coupons the retailer did away with when it adopted a new pricing strategy earlier this year. The company called it a one-time incentive to entice customers who hadn't yet seen the new store format, but some analysts say the gift may signal a return to coupons.
