Challenges and solutions in the virtual learning environment

In this commentary, virtual instructor Stephen W. Oliver writes about the primary challenges of engaging students in online learning and how to overcome them. One challenge, he writes, is accessibility of technology, which can be overcome by troubleshooting with students before instruction occurs, he writes. Another challenge -- distractions -- can be overcome by integrating video into virtual instruction, and, for students who are fearful of the virtual learning environment, he suggests focusing on building trust.
