How the Affordable Care Act affects veterinarians' bottom lines

A likely unintended consequence of the Affordable Care Act's medical device tax could be higher operating costs for veterinarians and possibly higher care costs for pet owners. Many veterinarians purchase medical devices marketed for human care, and those devices are subject to the law's 2.3% excise tax. "The AVMA does not believe that Congress intended the tax to impact veterinary medicine and has been clear that it does not support this tax, but we are now in a position where we must do what is best for both our members and the patients that we treat," said Dr. Mark Lutschaunig, who directs the AVMA's governmental relations division.
