Demolition begins on South Carolina bridge

Workers began demolishing the 39-year-old Silas Pearman Bridge that connects Charleston, S.C., and Mount Pleasant over the Cooper River, destroying a 500-foot segment with explosives. The eight-lane Ravenel Bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America, replaced the outdated bridge in July, allowing for Pearman Bridge and parallel Grace Memorial Bridge to be closed.
