Experts debate feasibility of visa monitoring system

With some 5 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. on expired visas, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., says stimulus funds should be used to create an electronic monitoring system to ensure that foreign visitors leave the country when their visas expire. But experts question whether the technology exists to create such a system without disrupting trade and travel, and airlines say they should not be responsible for photographing and fingerprinting departing passengers. The issue was pushed onto the national agenda last week when a 19-year-old illegal immigrant on an expired visa was accused of plotting to blow up a Dallas skyscraper.
