Replacement of the "functionally obsolete" 56-year-old Tappan Zee Bridge in New York will undergo expedited federal review and approval. However, the proposal will focus only on the bridge's replacement, which will cost $5.2 billion compared to the original plan that was broader in scope and included mass transit. The bridge's selection is a "a shot in the arm for the project and a major step forward to restoring this key piece of infrastructure and putting tens of thousands of New Yorkers back to work," according to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
