L.A. board taps retired Navy admiral as next schools chief

The Los Angeles Board of Education unanimously selected retired Vice Adm. David L. Brewer III as its next superintendent. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who will gain substantial control of schools on Jan. 1, said he was "deeply disappointed" by the board's decision to make its pick without his input and that of other district stakeholders.
