Analysis: Banks' trading gains offer insight into bond market

By reviewing quarterly income statements of major banks, investors can get an indication of whether those banks think a rally in the bond market is about to end. JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo significantly increased their mortgage-backed securities holdings guaranteed by government-sponsored entities in the first half of the year. They might be tempted to cash in unrealized gains from those holdings.
