AT&T "pleased" with DOJ's OK of Centennial purchase

The Justice Department has cleared AT&T's $945 million purchase of regional wireless carrier Centennial Communications, providing that the telecom divests some assets in Louisiana and Mississippi over fears the deal will reduce competition in those areas, DOJ officials said Tuesday. AT&T, which has already agreed to sell to Verizon Wireless five of the eight systems it needs to dispose of, said it was "pleased" with the government's decision. The carrier said it hoped to close the deal by year-end.
