Students design energy-efficient houses for government contest

Twenty teams of college and university students are designing, building and operating energy-efficient solar houses as part of the Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon competition. Students from the University of Arizona have designed a house with a water-filled Trombe wall that forms a solar thermal collector. Meanwhile, a "Silo House" designed by Cornell University students incorporates cylinders positioned under floating solar panels.
