Dow seeks alternative-energy sources, picks possible investments

U.S. major Dow Chemical is considering investments in a host of renewable raw materials, such as algae and ethanol, to scale down its reliance on petroleum as a feedstock for its products. "We're being as creative as we can in terms of, 'how do we get secure supply at the right economics?'" said Doug May, vice president of energy and climate change at Dow. One of Dow's alternative-energy projects is a joint venture with Algenol Biofuels to develop a technology that can reduce carbon dioxide emissions while producing a new type of alternative fuel.
