Officials probe high septicemia-infection rate in Calif. hospitals

The high rate of septicemia infections seen in California hospitals managed by Prime Healthcare Services has attracted the attention of state and federal officials, who are now investigating whether the infections point to a serious health problem or are results of Medicare billing fraud. Medicare reimbursements are higher for septicemia infections than other hospital-acquired infections. Prime Healthcare officials have denied any alleged wrongdoing.
