Insurers get more clarity on nonbank SIFI designation

The Financial Stability Oversight Council released a list of criteria that will be used to determine which insurers will be designated as systemically important financial institutions, and thus be subjected to increased regulation. A Keefe, Bruyette & Woods survey of the nine insurance carriers with more than $50 billion in assets showed that only MetLife and Prudential Financial met any of the criteria.
