Minn. program targets Somali refugee students who never attended school

A Minneapolis Public Schools pilot program teaches Somali refugee children the basics of academic life for a year before sending them to mainstream classrooms. Daily instruction by English-as-a-second-language teachers and a Somali co-teacher uses resources, such as East African folk tales, and includes lessons on how to focus, transition between activities, basic literacy, plus English and math skills.
