Japanese carriers to merge in bid to challenge NTT

KDDI has announced plans to buy PoweredCom in a deal that will help the carriers, Japan's second- and fourth-largest, respectively, to challenge market leader NTT. KDDI also is teaming up with Tokyo Electric Power, PoweredCom's parent, to offer fiber-optic services, an arrangement that will allow KDDI to stop leasing dark fiber from NTT.
