The Bronx Zoo's 23-year-old female gorilla, Holli, underwent abdominal surgery for an abscess during which a portion of her colon was removed. Keepers first noticed lethargy, and testing, including blood work and a CT scan, diagnosed the abscess. Human surgeons aided veterinarians during the surgery because gorilla anatomy is similar to that of humans. Holli is recovering well despite her resistance to taking intravenous or oral antibiotics.
