Debt standoff could cut off long list of government payments

The payment of unemployment and Social Security benefits, distribution of food stamps, payments to Medicare and Medicaid providers and tax refunds could be delayed if the standoff over the U.S. debt limit isn't resolved quickly, according to an analysis by the Bipartisan Policy Center. A drop in federal spending of that magnitude would have a significant impact on the nation's economic growth, economists agree.
