House response is unclear as Senate closes in on budget deal

Democratic and Republican leaders in the Senate say they are close to a compromise to raise the government's borrowing limit and avert a debt default. The deal would finance operation of the government through Jan. 15 and raise the debt ceiling through Feb. 7, a Senate aide said. Many conservative members of the House, which must approve the agreement before it can take effect, say they aren't prepared to go along with the deal.
