Italy's flood-barrier system undergoes first test

Massive barriers designed to prevent flooding in Venice, Italy, have undergone their first test. The Experimental Electromechanical Module barrier, or MOSE project, features four floodgates made of 78 mobile barriers, and is being built at three inlets that surround the city. The gates will be raised in the event of high tides and winter storms. "The benefit of the city is that no more floods will arrive and that all the ground floors of the city, which are usually washed out and destroyed by these tides, will be safe," said Hermes Redi, who is in charge of the project.
