N.C. provider leverages IBM tool to improve patient care

University of North Carolina Health Care has adopted the IBM Smarter Care solution to encourage patients to be involved in their care, cut 30-day readmissions and provide timely follow-up care for people with abnormal cancer screening results. The tool, which allows hospital staff to view and interpret important structured and unstructured patient data, leverages a natural language processing method like the one employed in IBM's Watson technology. "It can reveal trends, patterns and deviations while predicting the probability of outcomes so that we can make decisions in minutes versus weeks or months," said Dr. Carlton Moore, associate professor of medicine at UNCHC.
