Protein's increasing importance in snack foods

About half of all Americans eat at least one snack per day with snack foods providing 24% of daily calories but only 14% of daily protein intake. Snack-makers should strive to create products with 5 grams or more of high-quality protein, which is required before they can include a "good source of protein" claim on packaging, food industry consultant Sharon Gerdes writes.
