Small Neb. town taps Spiral to build 1-gigabit network

Nebraska City, Neb., officials have started the ball rolling to bring 1-gigabit service to the town of roughly 7,000, hiring Spiral Communications to build the residential and business network and provide the service. It is believed to be the first such commitment to a 1-gigbit plan in the state. Nebraska City retained Spiral even though the vendor has not completed engineering studies to determine the project's cost, according to local newspaper reports, which say Spiral will pay the city a 3% franchise fee.
