Texas, New York Might Raise Unemployment Taxes

To cope with rising jobless claims, New York and Texas officials say the states might need to borrow money or raise unemployment taxes by 2002 to maintain jobless-compensation funds. Both states have been hit hard by the rising unemployment as a result of airline, financial and tourist-industry cutbacks after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C.
