Nurse practitioner-run clinics raise NPs' roles up a notch

Nurse practitioners are gaining new respect -- and responsibility -- as they set up NP-run clinics around the country to take on many health care tasks typically conducted by doctors. The Columbia Advanced Practice Nurse Associates in New York, which pioneered the movement in 1994 as the first nurse-run clinic in the country, is being compensated by insurance companies at the same rate as a physician-led operation.
