Girls discover scientific prowess in hands-on program

A few months ago, eighth-graders Naimisha Movva and Belcabeth Martinez never would have considered their current plans to become structural engineers or doctors, but a YWCA TechGYRLS program expanded their horizons and helped them realize science is fun. "You don't see a lot of girls in technology," said eighth-grader Harley Thomas, who has developed an interest in engineering. "I always wanted to try it out, but other girls were all into cheerleading, makeup and stuff."
