US Airways-America West merger saved 35,000 jobs, CEO says

Despite ongoing friction over pilot seniority, the 2005 merger of US Airways and America West probably saved 35,000 jobs, according to CEO Doug Parker. "Neither the stand-alone US Airways nor the stand-alone America West could have managed through," he says. "Both these airlines would be nonexistent had they not merged." Parker added that the ongoing pilot dispute came as a surprise to management, though it has not affected customers' experience with the airline. "People read about it, but it hasn't affected our operations one bit," he said.
