Despite ongoing friction over pilot seniority, the 2005 merger of US Airways and America West probably saved 35,000 jobs, according to CEO Doug Parker. "Neither the stand-alone US Airways nor the stand-alone America West could have managed through," he says. "Both these airlines would be nonexistent had they not merged." Parker added that the ongoing pilot dispute came as a surprise to management, though it has not affected customers' experience with the airline. "People read about it, but it hasn't affected our operations one bit," he said.
