Chemical developers as well as consumers are touting the financial and environmental benefits of green chemistry, according to attorneys Maureen F. Gorsen and Michele M. Glessner in this column. Interest in green-chemistry programs has been growing in the U.S. and Europe, where societal costs are given due consideration when evaluating the effect of toxic chemicals. With enough measures geared toward protecting green-chemistry patents, chemical manufacturers could have greater incentives to focus their resources on developing innovative products and technologies.
