September retail sales rose more than expected

Retail sales rose 0.6% in September, according to a Commerce Department report released Friday. Sales beat analysts' expectations and offered merchants new hopes for the holiday season. Appliance stores and furniture merchants fared particularly well during the month, while apparel sales flattened out with the end of the back-to-school shopping season.
