Wash. district returns to the reading, writing basics

A Washington state school district is adopting a language-arts curriculum that gets back to the basics and is meant to support the Common Core State Standards. Among the changes will be a return to cursive-writing instruction, more nonfiction works and increased focus on grammar and vocabulary. One second-grade teacher is trying Core Knowledge Language Arts, which integrates social studies and science material to teach other skills.
