Drugmakers in late stages of several possible Alzheimer's drugs

Several drugs in late-stage trials are showing potential as treatments for Alzheimer's disease, some of them originally intended for other diseases. Drugmakers behind the trials say they expect to apply to the FDA within the next few years for a variety of solutions, including a prostate-cancer drug, a diabetes drug and one derived from an old class of anti-inflammatory drugs. Other trials of such treatments as statins and antibodies also are showing promise.
