Shares of mall owners fall on poor Sept. retail numbers

Fears about poor results in the retail sector pushed shares of mall owners down 14% Wednesday. Retailers reported a 1.2% sales decline for September. "This is of greater import for discretionary items, for regional mall performance, because of the specific impact on retailers that fit into that mix, like apparel stores, department stores and small electronics," said Sam Chandan, chief economist for real estate analysis firm Reis.
