5% of overall drug spending is for oncology meds

Rising to a 5% share of overall drug spending in the first six months of the year, drugs for cancer treatment may soon be the biggest segment of specialty-pharmacy spending, according to Medco Health Solutions. Medications prescribed for oncology now represent the third-largest segment, following autoimmune conditions and multiple sclerosis. Spending on cancer drugs increased 15.1% last year and is expected to account for 9% of all prescription drug spending growth in the next two years.
