Algae-based fuels are still years away from the market

Sapphire Energy, Synthetic Genomics, Phycal and Aurora Algae are among the companies worldwide vying to produce commercial quantities of fuel from algae. "This technology is so compelling -- and it will make such a big difference -- that, once it gets out of the gate, it will ramp up very quickly," said Sapphire Energy CEO Cynthia Warner. However, even some supporters acknowledge that algae-based fuels might not reach the market for at least another five to 10 years, with high capital and operating costs seen as the major hindrance to commercialization.
