N.C. man urges vet status for WWII merchant marines

A North Carolina man, Don Horton, is looking to get veteran status for the roughly 30,000 U.S. merchant marines who helped pull barges during World War II. In 1988, Congress mandated that the Defense Department grant former merchant marine members full veteran status, but individuals who did not receive discharge papers from the Coast Guard have been unable to attain the designation. Horton is pushing his proposal to federal lawmakers from Washington state.
