Openly LGBT candidates face tougher road in Tenn., advocates say

Tennessee has elected only one LGBT candidate to public office in its history, but that could change early next year if an announced openly gay candidate wins his race for the Chattanooga City Council, according to this article. The state’s politics are heavily influenced by religious conservatives, and out candidates have to be “willing to wade into that environment,” said former Nashville Metro Councilman Keith Durbin.
