Digital checklist improves safety during ICU transfers, study shows

A study from Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., found a digital checklist for transferring neuroscience ICU patients to other hospital units helped increase medication reconciliation by 20% and reduce urinary catheterization time by 22%. The report, presented at the American Neurological Association's annual meeting, noted poor communication during clinical transfers leads to many medical errors. Study author Dr. Elizabeth Coon said the checklist could be used in any ICU because patients often leave the units with unnecessary catheters and medications.
