As the shutdown entered its third week, its effects include reduced government support for research, consumer safety and drug reviews. The FDA remains unable to approve new drugs and medical products. The CDC's disease detection efforts have been limited, and hundreds of patients are unable to enroll in clinical trials through the NIH.
