Paper maps are down but not out

Paper highway maps have languished as GPS has risen in popularity, but some devoted collectors are still committed to them and all they represent about the country's pioneering spirit, journalist Michael Brick writes in this blog post. "I think that, deep down, people still like the idea of being out on their own, traveling without any agenda," said James R. Akerman, director of the Newberry Library's Center for the History of Cartography. "The map is a pretty powerful symbol of that."
