Middle-school students in Coventry, Ohio, recently boarded a tall ship at Put-In-Bay to learn about the bicentennial of the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. The students experienced battle re-enactments, navigated, hoisted sails and visited a living history campsite. "All of the students left the island understanding the significance of the War of 1812 and a renewed appreciation for freedom," said teacher Jim Trogdon, who said the trip was a "better teachable moment" than just reading about it.
