Why Allstate tried to induce Twitter's "fail whale"

Allstate brought its Mayhem character to Twitter last month, and started with a test of the social network's resiliency. The account posted 447 tweets about whales in rapid succession, hoping to overload the site and summon Twitter's "fail whale" page. The stunt didn't bring down Twitter, but Allstate's account has gained 13,000 followers.
