Upmarket UK supermarkets on rise as consumers shun austerity

ALDI, Lidl and other heavy discount grocers operating in the UK thrived during the economic downturn, prompting the term "ALDI effect". As the economy is recovering, however, many consumers have had enough of austerity food shopping and are returning to more upmarket chains, such as Waitrose and Sainsbury's.
