Why the Nature Conservancy is betting on big business

Conservationists from the Nature Conservancy are in a $10 million, five-year partnership with Dow Chemical, with the hope of shaping the chemical giant's strategic decisions. The group's collaborative approach to conservation is not universally liked, but the payoff could be huge, officials say. "Our theory is that there are intervention points at which scientific input can potentially influence corporate practices and decisions," says chief scientist Peter Kareiva.
