Author and nurses share their journeys in dealing with breast cancer

As she was treated for breast cancer, Carolyn Jones, the author and photographer with the American Nurse Project, relied on nurse Joanne Staha's sense of humor along the way. "The nurse is the one person you can connect with emotionally on the medical side and it is the most critical relationship," Jones said. In working as a breast cancer nurse navigator, registered nurse Terri Leschunk said patients need someone they can trust to help them through a bewildering array of treatment options. "Dealing with breast cancer is a very personal journey and I get to be involved in that journey -- to be with patients at some of their lowest times in life," Leschunk said.
